It all began when we started following @theluxenomad on Instagram. Waking up to breathtaking pictures of world travel, lunch-breaking to the latest exotic resort featured on flash-sale, and falling asleep to posts of endless miles of beaches and sunshine. After about a month of day dreaming of the Maldives, Thailand and the Greek Islands, we decided we needed to get out of town and have a luxe get away of our own.
We ended up booking an all-inclusive resort in the Riviera Maya, Azul Sensatori by Karisma through a timeshare swap. As the departure date got closer and we become more and more antsy to flee town - an invoice came in the mail for $1,800... just for food!
As we talked it over, we decided it really wasn't that bad since it would include all of our meals and beverages and who really wants to worry about any of that when on vacation? I'll take a margarita... make that five.
Fortunately, my boyfriend's mom gave us a second opinion and we realized it wasn't really worth the cost. Within a week of our departure date, we rebooked to The Royal Sands in Cancun, with no extra/hidden costs.
We had a beautiful villa with pool and ocean views for an amazing seven nights. With all of the money we saved not staying at an all-inclusive, we were able to take a snorkel trip through the great reefs of Puerto Morelos, dine at new restaurants around Cancun each night, and explore the riviera on bike - for about half of what we would have paid JUST for food at the all-inclusive!
If you're looking to get away to the Mexican Riviera, whether you splurge on the all-inclusive or take the thrifty route, here are some tips from our trip!
Don't be cheap on your flight route . Long layovers really do suck.
Pack a plastic bag for your trip home. High humidity = nothing dries.
Negotiate. Especially for transportation.
Hit the store when you arrive and stock up on breakfast foods, snacks & beer. Less time in restaurants = more time on the beach!
Don't pay to use the resort gym. Run on the beach and try some acrobatic couples yoga. If you're any good, you may get an audience :)
Skip the cab ride after dinner. Stroll home on the beach, even if it takes an hour.
It may look doubtful, but Cancun Mermaid was a great snorkel trip! It included a free day trip to Puerto Morelos and an authentic lunch on the beach... shark dip!
